Learn About Parallel Ports
Parallel ports are used to connect devices to a computer. While there has been a trend towards connecting more devices through the use of a USB, printers are still commonly connected with a parallel port. When a computer sends information to a printer, it does so by sending bits of data. These bits are sent parallel to one another, hence the name parallel port. Each pin is responsible for a specific function. Together, they work to send and receive information to both the computer and the printer or other connected device.
IBM was the original creator of this device. The goal was to prevent external devices from needing to be hardwired directly into the computer. Obviously, this would have been a huge hassle, and this technology made it simple to connect not only printers, but external hard drives, scanners, zip drives and more to a computer.
The standard printer port is the 25 pin variety. Most desktop computers come with one of these. Those that wish to connect more than one printer or device at a time will need to purchase an adapter. This allows more than one device to be connected at the same time. There are also converters available for those that wish to connect a USB cord to a parallel port.
The cord that is used to connect the printer to the parallel port should be as short as possible. This is to keep the connection speed fast. Research shows that cords over 30 feet in length are not able to transfer data at a reasonable speed. Cords are available in a number of lengths, and are inexpensive.
The future of parallel ports is uncertain. It may be that new uses for this technology are discovered. For now, they will continue to be used to connect a number of devices quickly and easily.
